MacGPS Pro in the Press
MacGPS Pro at Play
"MacGPS Pro is awesome! I use it all the time for hiking and cycling" . . . Chris in Colorado
"I have just returned home to Sydney after 3 weeks walking in the beautiful but rugged and remote country around Wilpena Pound and Arkaroola near central Australia. I have been delighted with your program and it has added greatly to our enjoyment of the trip. A very nice piece of software in the best Apple tradition. Thanks." . . . John in Australia
"I mostly use my Macgpspro software for off-road motorcycle trips through
Morocco. I found some old Russian military maps from the 70's and the
software allows me to calibrate them and plan routes simply and accurately.
And the improved updates they send me just make life easier" . . . Phil in France
"When I found your site (after looking through http://www.geocaching.com) I
got down on my knees and thanked god above that someone made this software
for Mac!" . . . Bruce in New York
"I've just taken up geocaching and find your MacGPS Pro application so convenient for moving cache waypoints from the Geocache.com site to my Garmin GPS and I appreciate that your application recognizes the waypoint symbols for geocache and geocache found so I can easily distinguish at a glance between the caches that I've already found and those I must still locate" . . . Frank from California
"I wanted to compliment you on developing a fantastic piece of software. . . Planning hiking routes is now so easy -- and I love loading the trail afterwards to see where I actually went! My only problem is that I'm now walking far further, and stopping in fewer country pubs" . . . Chris in South Yorkshire, UK
"There is nothing that compares to MacGPSPro from Larry James. It allows for
calibration of a background map to the GPS coordinate system (LatLon or UTM),
and has two-way transfers of waypoints, tracks and routes between the GPS and
Mac. My favorite way to use it is to make a 2D map from the USGS 100K DLG
data showing roads and water features (creeks and lakes) and calibrate it
using MacGPSPro using tick marks of known lat/lon at the map corners. I then
capture a track by clicking along the trails that I will be hiking or skiing.
I then download this to the GPS and, voila, I have an exact map of my route in
the GPS, not the "as the crow flies" stick-map that the route display
produces. I then add a few significant waypoints for trail crossings and
points of interest (nearby peaks, springs, waterfalls, etc.). With this
system I almost never have to take my topo map out of the pack, and just use
the GPS and compass. . . The cost of the SW is very modestly priced for its feature set and he sends out frequent upgrades via email that are more feature additions than bug fixes. I have no association with Larry other than as a very satisfied user" . . . John in Santa Clara, CA
"The current version has been great for trip planning and navigating. The most valuable use we have been putting it to has been in locating trail heads and highly cryptic road junctions in the New South Wales bushland. The ease of interface that MacGPS Pro provides with the Garmin GPS has saved us considerable time and anxiety" . . . Brian in Australia
"I use a Garmin eTrex Legend and MacGPS Pro a little differently than most folks, I'd guess. I'm not so much interested in where I'm going, but more in where I've been. I'm a motorcyclist and mount the eTrex on the handle bar of my motorcycle and head out to wherever the front wheel takes me. I'll spend all day wandering around the back roads of eastern Ontario, occasionally setting a waypoint (to match the pictures) at some interesting place and generally looking for twisty bits to have fun on. On return home I download the day's track log into MacGPS Pro, load up the appropriate map, and have a look at where I've been. I keep a 'superlog' of all the year's trips, which can make for a very busy map! By the way, I must thank you for including auto-calibration of maps using the .jpr and .map files included by the folks at ETopo. What a time saver!" . . . Kyle in Canada
"I have just gotten into geocaching - found my first cache yesterday. The
groundspeak forums have a very good review of your MacGPS Pro as it relates
to geocaching. I must also say that you and your company give some of the best customer service around. I will always recommend you as a source of gps products for that reason. Thanks again!!" . . . Colin in Iowa
"Just wanted to tell you how useful I found your software. I am an avid ski tourer and thought a GPS would be a handy way of dealing with bad weather on extended (9 days) ski tours. I have a Garmin GPS . .. and a copy of MacGPS Pro. I scanned in the 1:100000 maps of the area I ski in (Kosiucsko National Park in New South Wales), fitted them together and sharpened them in Photoshop, saved the result as a JPEG and imported it into MacGPS. I used MacGPS to enter the planned routes one at a time (making sure that a days travel would fit on the screen) and then copied the screen to the clipboard as well as uploading the new
route to my GPS. Back in Photoshop I pasted the clipboard into a new document and scaled it to fit on an A4 page and printed it using a colour bubble jet printer. I finished with a series of easily manageable 'map sheets' of fair quality (contours etc. good enough to read but not perfect!) It worked out very well, we rarely had to resort to transferring our location to a 'real map' (in our case the 1:50000 series) just relying on the 'bubble jet' maps and the GPS. On one leg we spent 8 hours skiing in the rain (it is Australia! 8-) ) with visibility down to about 50 meters and our navigation was spot on. We used a map and compass and used the GPS to check our progress and track (and as a security blanket!). The 'bubble jet' maps didn't even run when they got wet!" . . . Mike in Australia
"Thank you for the update. . . I was heading off on a long trip around Australia . . . I have just returned after more than 20,000 miles travelling, much of it off-road (sometimes even without tracks!), and used MacGPS Pro extensively" . . . Barrie in Australia
"Thanks for continuing your great support of this excellent product.
I've been using it to generate maps of a system of old logging roads near
some family property in northern WI, which is making for great recreation
for the whole clan" . . . Jeff in Missouri
"I've been using MacGPS Pro for hiking for two months now with an etrex
legend and its really great. At first I scanned British OS maps to plan routes. However there is actually a good (and free!) source online now which you might want to include in your internet file info. www.streetmap.co.uk will generate a
map of anywhere in the UK at the street level, but if you zoom out one step
you get the OS Landranger map (3x3 km portion). Each km square is 200x200
pixels so there's plenty of resolution and you can even search by OS grid
coordinate. It takes a couple of minutes of cut and paste to generate a
map suitable for hiking. keep up the good work" . . . Peter in United Kingdom
"Thanks for your program. I am an amateur bird call recordist. I use a Garmin eTrex to capture tracks walked in the bush and the location of recording points. I use MacGPS Pro to place tracks and waypoints on maps. I import scanned base maps into MacGPS Pro. I copy and paste and export the maps that MacGPS Pro produces from eTrex data. I am very satisfied by your program's features and its ease of use." . . . Michael in Australia
"I am one of your very satisfied customers...Last week I was backcountry skiing in the amazingly beautiful Dickson Range... about 180 km due north of Vancouver, British Columbia, in the southern Chilcotin region. A group of 5 of us were 35 km from civilization for 6 days. It was a week of high drama. There were ascents to cols over 8,000 ft, glorious descents in deep powder snow on the glaciers, many spectacular 'IMAX moments' (those mountains are breath-taking) with the added impact of high winds, cold, fatigue, heated discussions, remarkably exotic meals and wonderfully good humour.
But... the first night we did not find the cabin. We were benighted. After we had built a snow cave and settled in, this life-threatening event evolved into a memorable adventure. Until I returned home I was in the dark as to how we had missed our mark. I have an inexpensive little pouch that allows me to carry my eTrex Summit on the shoulder strap of my pack. At critical times along our route it was not difficult to turn it on and just let it run for a few moments. That would have produced almost useless data if I didn't have MacGPS Pro.
Now, back home, I have been able to plot those positions precisely on the topo map, and see exactly where, when, and why we went astray. I have been able to explore every feature of the map so thoroughly that I could now confidently find my way around there without a map or GPS. Without MacGPS Pro, all that I would know was that we were lost and there would have been almost no learning. Thanks" . . . Robert in British Columbia, Canada
"Just want to say thanks for your incredible efforts in satisfying your customers! MacGPS is a wonderful product. I spent my recent one-week-holiday biking around my home area with the GPS mounted on the bike. Then I did a very high quality coloured scan of a 1:100 000 topographical map of that area and used it with the MacGPS. The result was amazing! I never expected the accuracy in the display and I never expected the accuracy of the GPS. I am very excitedly looking forward to use this technique during an archaeological expedition to Sudan...Your comfortable handling of software delivery/update and the reasonable pricing are exemplary. Please go on like this!" . . . Andreas in Germany
"Thanks again for an excellent product and for the continued support...Currently I am using MacGPS with a friend that has a lodge about 100 miles into the backcountry NW of Anchorage. We are sussing out a route for snowmachines from his lodge to a popular riding area 85 miles away. There are numerous rivers, a couple canyons, swamps, forests, and of course some mountains in between. MacGPS over topos has become an essential tool!" . . . Patrick in Alaska
"Just wanted to let you know that you write an awesome "little" program, here. Upon downloading, I hit some of the USGS sites to get some maps with which I'm familiar to play with and familiarize myself with your program. Took a little fooling around before I hit the right information in your instructions to get the maps open, but once there, (and it really couldn't be simpler) I was delighted to hit and have it put a little pink (or is it chartreuse?) diamond EXACTLY where the coordinates for our cabin in Montana is. We have an eTrex and I saved the cabin site as a waypoint last summer. I used the coordinates straight off the eTrex. This is really cool! I'm going to see if some others in my family are interested in this and I'll have you charge my credit card for any additional copies. I'm a firm believer in paying for intellectual property and at this price, it's already a steal. Again, thanks for a great product!" . . . Bob in Colorado
"Thanks for MacGPS Pro, it's got be the most amazing and useful program I have." . . . Paul in Wisconsin
"Been having really great success with MacGPS Pro. Enclosed is a section of a 1000km trip I did into the Western Australian desert this weekend. My friends who have PCs . . . have had their setups for months and still cannot do real time tracking. They keep calling me up on the radio and asking if they are going in the right direction. Thanks for making me look good!" . . . John in Australia
MacGPS Pro at Sea
"Anyone with a Garmin and a Mac should own this software... I use this software while sea kayaking in Alaska... I have used MacGPS Pro for 7 years or so and nobody that sees it demonstrated is less than astounded. I have pc friends that have bought macs just so they could use it. It has saved my life twice for
sure and kept me out of trouble more often than I probably will ever know... I have no connection to MacGPS Pro other than I use it and like it. A lot." . . . Bud in Alaska
"Since sending you an email message telling you of my satisfaction with your program, I switched to another vendor because they could read BSB and SoftChart formats. I was thrilled to learn that you have continued to upgrade this software, as it is clearly the best in the Mac navigation field. I am happy to return as one of your most satisfied customers." . . . JRF in California
"MacGPS Pro is great! Friends invite me out sailing on San Francisco Bay. I make pict files (usually convert to JPEG) of the voyage with the track, speeds, etc. as a thank you. These are a great hit." . . . B.P. in California
"I have used MacGPS Pro for many years in my travels from the Western Pacific to the Arctic (I am a Navy officer specializing in submarines). Your program is superb but it is your customer service which puts it 'over the top'.". . . F.J.D. in Virginia
" . . . I'm incredibly pleased with MacGPS Pro. This is a fantastic and wonderful product. In the realm of commerical software your product competes along with any product put out by a 'big name' company. The coding is solid, the instructions and manuals are very detailed, the program is easy to use and it's incredibly robust. I'm truly thankful to you for making this incredible program for the Mac community. In the weeks since I've been using it I've delighted my friends and sailing buddies with information and graphics about our trips, I've improved my racing by using the important data the program provides and most importantly I've had fun using the software" . . . Nojan in Washington
"I was happy to see in an editorial in the Dutch leading sailing magazine that the Dutch firm Stentec is now offering Dutch charts on Mac-CDrom for MacGPS Pro" . . . Henk in the Netherlands
"I'm a dedicated customer who has been using MacGPSPro for a few years. I use an old Garmin with a serial-USB adaptor with an iBook...Thanks very much for your continuing updates to MacGPS Pro. I have sailed many thousands of miles with it, sometimes a few hundred miles offshore". . .Nat in New Hampshire
"Thanks for such a great product. It's transformed my kayaking adventures!" . . . Jeff in northern California
"The program is really quite something. I am going to be demonstrating it at a sailing seminar next week...I am hooked. Can't wait to get on the Mediterranean in June!" . . . James in Germany
"I want to tell you of my extreme satisfaction with your program MacGPS Pro -- I have been sailing on the Chesapeake Bay for several years, and never could justify the expense of a dedicated chart plotter. Now, my powerbook accompanies me, and your program provides real-time navigation ... and additional functionality beyond that of normal paper charts. Thanks again for a great product" . . . John in Maryland
"I have used this program cruising the Gulf islands and across Georgia strait last summer with great results. It is so nice to just look at the chart, which is an exact copy of the paper one I have in my hand, and see where we are with all the GPS input data displayed in a box at the top, including satelite signal strength" . . . Nick in Victoria, B.C.
"Pre-plotting courses have saved my prop from reef damage on several trips while opening up a popular bay for exploration outside of marked channels.". . . Dean in Hawaii
"Thanks so much for the great work on MacGPS Pro 5.2.1. It is a critical part of a research effort that requires us to grapple for seafloor instruments in the Beaufort Sea. There are no buoys, only GPS positions of the instrument and an anchor separated by 120 m of tag line that we must grapple for "blind". MacGPS Pro's velocity vector feature has been a godsend for the vessel captain, who must maintain a speed of about 1-2 knots in a specific direction in the face of wind, seas, and current." . . . Bill in California
"I am very happy with the company of my Mac on trips with our family yacht: Bavaria 36 Holiday. This season we made trips totalling 1200 nautical miles with MacGPS Pro". . . Eric in Belgium
"MacGPS Pro has added so much more enjoyment to my GPS and my sailing. Thanks again for a great product" . . . Dave in Canada
"This program just seems to get better and better with each edition. I fire up the computer with the MacGPS Pro on it just to go across the harbor because I love to play with it. Thank again" . . . Nick in British Columbia
"I send you a file with two examples of route and track logs of my summer
sailing trip on our coastal estuary. I have an old powerbook on
board and scanned maps (b/w) A long wire connects the mac at the chart
table to the garmin in the cockpit. everything works fine, you saved me from grounding several times! thanks for being able to use your product!" . . . Michael in the Netherlands, Europe
"GPS Pro gets better and better on my Mac. I use it with a Garmin GPS for boating." . . .Wallace in California
"The program works great. I work on a research ship, and I'm currently out in the middle of the Pacific on my way from the middle of nowhere to Kauai. I was able to tap into one of the numerous GPS serial feeds we have in the labs, grab a chart CD from the bridge, and load up a BSB chart. I'm now enjoying my own Underway data system independent of what the bridge is doing with the dynamic positioning system screens.". . .Geoff in the Pacific
"Just want you to know, you are a good guy. Have used my GPS and your software sailing all over the San Francisco Bay. Also took it windsurfing with me, where I clocked a maximum of 28.5 MPH" . . . Bill in California
MacGPS Pro at Work
"We do radiotelemetry of a threatened local mammal, the Allegheny woodrat, and use MacGPS Pro to plot denning locations and habitat patches. I'm also on the board of a small non-profit, The Heritage Plantation Cemetery Preservation Foundation. . . I have used MacGPS Pro extensively in our historic research. It's beautifully adapted to calibrating historic plat maps and landmarks with aerial photos and current maps. We've used it to locate historic property lines, irrigation ditches, former slave quarters and cemeteries. . . I just wanted to take the time to say thanks for your great support. We are continually discovering research applications for MacGPS Pro, and we appreciate all you're doing to keep it current." . . . Janet Wright, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Biology, Dickinson College in Pennsylvania

labs and am writing an article about the experience" . . . Bill in
Texas
"I have been using MacGPS Pro for less than one month and found it an impressive software. It was useful both for geology (my job) and for cycling (my hobby). In fact, I was able to rapidly plot on UTM maps sampling points and tracks recorded during field work and to file and draw on map offroad itineraries made by mountain byke". . . Alfredo in Italy
"I find MacGPS Pro invaluable for my work. Last week I became the
first person to ever ride a motorcycle (or any motor vehicle) on all
seven continents. I'm now in Madrid and Africa was the last
continent. MacGPS Pro has recorded the whole two year venture. And I
do appreciate it" . . . David in Australia
"I just wanted to pass along how pleased I am with your program and its ease of use with my Garmin GPSMap 60CS for environmental work and resources mapping. I am a former user of [another program], and your program is just as easy to use with much more robust features regarding the ability to produce maps directly from my GPS data.". . . Michael in Colorado
"Thanks! I am working on a paper right now which used MacGPS as a tool in
ground-truthing satellite images from the amazon basin. I cited the program,
and am providing readers with the James Associates website (and other
GIS-related websites). I hope this free publicity in scientific circles will
be of use to you! You've got a great program. Thanks for keeping me
updated." . . . Glenn in Brazil
"Love the program. I use it in my wildlife law enforcement job to map
illegal kills and present cases to the courts. Thanks for such a
great piece of software" . . . Brad in Utah
"When I undertook the job of running a horse ride over the pony express trail I needed to set up the routes so that I could down load them to the participants GPS units. I searched for a mapping program that would allow me to enter WPT data and then manipulate that data to create individual courses on a daily basis. As I searched the various companies, I found that no one, to my dismay, offered anything that would work on a Mac. I finally broke down and bought a PC and went back to the software companies to find software that I could use. Each of them would have a different set of capabilities but none would be able to do all that I needed. I was indeed frustrated and finally called someone who suggested I call Dr. James. I did and when he told me that his software could do all I needed and more I was ecstatic. He then said that unfortunately it would not work on a PC and I was once again disappointed, thinking that it must be a UNIX program. I was obviously overjoyed to find that the only software that I could find that would meet all of my requirements was designed for a MAC.
I was able to download all of the routes and waypoints into the Mac, manipulate the data to suit my needs and then download it all back to the participant's GPS receivers. During the planning stages of the ride I had offers from more than a few "computer hacks" who would be able to organize all of the data and get it to work. When we showed up in St. Joseph at the beginning of the ride we had a meeting to show all of the participants how to use the GPS units. There were several people who were still trying to find a way to take the WP data off the spreadsheets and put it into their computers and receivers. I wish Apple Inc. could have been there to watch the mayhem. The short story is that within an few minutes we were able to take the receivers from over 75 participants and download the weeks routes into their units, using three Mac Laptops. Of the three or four PC users, there was only one who was able to finally figure out how to upload the data into his program, manipulate it and then download it. That was the good news, the bad was that it took him over two weeks to get it done. Those of us with the Macs had a wonderful time rubbing it in.
Bottom line is that this is great software that works all of the time and does far more than this computer challanged person can handle. I continue to put on long distance horse rides and use and recommend the MacGPS Pro software exclusively. Thanks for such a great product." . . . Dr. David Nicholson, XP Rides in Utah
"I have been using your MacGPS Pro for a couple of years now and I am
very pleased. . . We have been doing some field work in Rwanda as well as in
Ethyopia. I am a water engineer working in relief programs for

to our fantastic mushroom hiding places as well . . . Thanks for the
program and for all the efforts you´ve been putting down in all
updates" . . . Georg in Norway
"I like the simple yet accurate nature of your software, and have yet to calibrate a map myself. I have been using topo maps that I downloaded from A.R.I.A. (I have since placed an order for your DVD package of AZ topo maps). I use MacGPS Pro every working day in my work truck in conjunction with my iBook G4 laptop as a reference while traveling the northern areas of Arizona for the refrigeration company I work for. "Thanks for continuing to develop this software. I've been using it for years and have always found it easy and intuitive to use. Keep up the good work!" . . . Mark in North Carolina
"I really like the new "Find USGS Topo Map Name From Location" menu item. Sometimes even on the nice CASIL interface, it's hard to tell exactly which map I need for a certain location. That new feature of yours really makes it easy, so I no longer find myself wastefully downloading the wrong 15MB file!" . . . Patty in California
"I'm a complete novice with respect to computers and GPS's -- just bought a basic Garmin Etrex 2 weeks ago. After searching the web for something that would connect the Etrex to a Mac, I ran across your MacGPS Pro. There were very good reviews so I took a chance and called you. I've never bought any software over the net, never from an individual, and never through email delivery. I ordered your MacGPS Pro . . . downloaded and calibrated my first map . . . and transferred a saved track to a topo map on the iMac. I can't believe it! I would recommend you and your MacGPS Pro to anyone. Your software and hardware work as advertised! Thank you for all the thought and work you obviously put into this product" . . . Dan in Pennsylvania

I am pleased at how intuitive this program is to use. I am new to GPS receivers and brand new to your program" . . . Doug in New Jersey

"Thanks very much for your prompt assistance! It's what sets you at the pinnacle of s/w vendors!" . . . Robert in Pennsylvania

"You should know that I have used MacGPS Pro since version 2.3.1 in 1997 and have loved the program. As an avid, or maybe rabid, user of GPS, MacGPS Pro has made my love of maps and navigation far more intuitive and enjoyable. It is my interface of choice between maps and the world outside." . . . Malcolm in Minnesota.
"I am enjoying learning to use MacGPS Pro with my Garmin eTrex Venture and a 3400 PowerBook...I'm particularly fascinated by your fine discussion of map projections. While I was certainly aware of the general projection problem, I did not realize there were so many different solutions! It's been an interesting education for this retired Professor of Engineering." . . . Earl in New York

"Nice piece of software I use since some years. Happy to find it on OSX" . . . Bernard in Switzerland
"I just wanted to let you know that I'm ordering the update not only because of the new features, but even more for the many updates that you have provided by email over the years that I have used MacGPS Pro. I work at a Mac-only retail store, and I recommend your software every chance that I get. I only wish that many of the big software companies were as responsive with updates and as approachable as you are. Thank you for a great product.". . . Jeremy in Canada

I will promote MacGPS Pro wherever I can in Mac circles." . . . Dean in Australia

"I am always impressed how much better the support is for programs from small dedicated companies like yours, compared to the big ones" . . . Thomas in Germany
"Love your software. Nothing could be easier to use. I didn't buy it when I got my first Garmin III cuz I thought that any software package that would do what Pro will do had to be a bear to learn to use. Quite the contrary. I bought it when I needed to down load the routes/waypoints from my III so I could exchange it for a III plus. I was amazed. Nothing could have been simpler." . . . John in California
"I commend your timely and helpful revisions to this application. I try to tell everyone I know that THIS is the answer to GPS on the Mac. Great work." . . . Detlev in California

"I later discovered and now use separate Mac software to upload/download waypoints etc to my GPS. This Software is Mac GPS Pro. It opens almost any type of map. You then either download the waypoints or routes recorded on your GPS or mark waypoints or routes on your map (which is on your Mac screen) then upload these to the GPS. There are tons of other features including Real-Time Display of GPS coordinates. MacGPS Pro works great and you don't have to run Virtual PC all the time. I get most of my maps as digital versions of 1:24,000 7.5 minute topographic maps from the Montana State Public Library for free. The MacGPS Pro website has a huge list of web based map sources". . . Ralph in Montana

"MacGPS Pro...is a program that allows you to download any map, quickly calibrate the image then run your GPS onto it. This allows you to follow your location on any map ie/topographic maps. Very nice for camping, offroading hiking etc." . . . Jason
"MacGPS Pro rocks. While it's true that MacGPS Pro (James Associates) does not support street level things, for backcountry users it is the best software on the market. period. It is updated and supported better than any other program I know and it works flawlessly with Garmin and Mac, allowing an incredible range of functions with Topo maps". . .

"I use MacGPS Pro on several macs. It is a great mac application and a great value. There are a number of other old topics on GPS+macs and MacGPS Pro in the forums that can be searched. If you end up getting a Garmin GPS receiver you should buy MacGPS Pro". . . Brian and Terry in California
"I've been using MacGPS Pro for about a year now and that's the main thing that I like about it. They tend to mail updates every few months or so. Don't be put off by the fact that they don't have a demo version avalable for download on their website, it will do all that you need". . . Donovan
"MacGPS Pro works well. You can save/manage waypoints, tracks etc. If you have digital maps, you can calibrate them and then overlay your waypoints, tracks, etc. You can even get a moving map display if you have an iBook or PowerBook. . . You will need a USB/Serial converter. I've got a Keyspan that works fine with MacGPS Pro"
"...using MacGPS Pro....every time they come out with an update, it's emailed to me". . . C. M.
". . . MacGPS Pro will let me get my track and waypoints out and overlay on a DRG or output as a vector file to be used in Illustrator or FreeHand and I'm very happy with this implementation". . . G. in California
"New Macgps Pro, Anyone tried it?"
"I got it today. it works GREAT!!! All the new features that I have tried worked great. Conversions for .LOC files works great!!! For the money, this is a GREAT program. THANX for making something for the MAC user!!!". . . Mahly
". . .For manipulating waypoints and plotting waypoints on topo maps I've found that the commercial product MacGPS Pro works well". . . Eddy from Oregon
"I second (or is it third by this point?) the recommendation of MacGPS Pro. I should be receiving the new version any day now; it can take coordinates from GPX as well as LOC files. I'm running it under OS X, but it works on OS 9, too. I love how I can mark waypoints on a map in MacGPS Pro, then download them to my Garmin, and also create waypoints when I'm in the field and upload them to view them on maps later. BTW, I bought the necessary Keyspan/USB cable combination from James Associates when I got MacGPS Pro" . . .Wintertime

Written to the Map-mac mailing list:
"I use MacGPS Pro and i have nothing
but good things to say about it as far as a program goes! I use mine
mainly with imported USGS DRG maps and use it to plot out points I
have collected with a Garmin . . . or for plotting points on the map
and downloading them to the gps as either a tracklog map or as
waypoints. I then usually bring the data file into ArcView and save
the points as a shapefile and then import that into
Mapublisher in Freehand. . . it's a great program and very reasonable
price, and the author seems committed to the software and has made
many updates since bought it . . . i just get an attachment to an
email once in awhile of a whole new version of the program. . . ps:
no affiliation with the company, just fond of the product". . . Greg

As seen on a GPS website:
"I used the program, MacGPS, written by Lawrence James of Nederland, Colorado. . . on my Mactintosh. It is a wonderful program that has been improved frequently, often at the request of users. He sends free updates for over a year" . . . L. Coleman, University of Arkansas

"One thing you can do with MacGPS Pro is calibrate a digital map and then create routes, waypoints or tracks on your Mac and then send them to the GPS. The
non-mapping GPS units are quite a bit cheaper than the mapping units.
Depending on what you are doing, here are some options: If you are hiking,
mountain biking, or 4 wheeling, etc. in the USA you can download topo maps
for free and MacGPS Pro can autocalibrate them, and then you can do waypoint
etc. creation. . . If you have a scanner, then you can copy any paper map you have and calibrate it with MacGPS Pro and do the waypoint, route, etc. thing." . . . Tom

I've been using this product for almost four years (including the early OS9-only versions), and have nothing but praise for the application and its developers. Modestly priced and immodestly updated (i.e., as soon as the need arises or faster), MacGPS Pro is a model of what shareware can be and should be. James Associates is both responsible and responsive. What more can you ask?". . . Bullate
"This program just saved my butt! It has the ability to save your waypoints to a file (which I did two weeks ago). This weekend my GPS receiver lost five year's worth of stored waypoints, but I was able to restore them thanks to MacGPS Pro. . . it's a great program and the only one of its kind for Mac OS X. Thanks to the developer!". . . John7200
"Last week, I tucked a Garmin Gecko 301 into the pocket of my parka and headed for the ski slopes. As a young ski racer, I wanted to know my speeds on different runs to aid in my training program. When I got home, I loaded a topo map of the ski area (from James Associates' Rocky Mountain National Park CDROM) into MacGPS Pro. I connected the Gecko and transferred my tracklogs to the Mac. There were all my runs, right on top of the ski trails indicated on the map! All my locations, the actual times I was there, and the clocked speeds of every section of my runs were recorded and available to me by zooming in on that map. Man, this program is good. I could analyze every run I made that day. What a great addition to my ski training program . . . The original price was very reasonable and there is a super policy of providing frequent updates free! Customer support has been outstanding. Way cool MacGPS Pro!" . . . Skikid
"For years, I have enjoyed using MacGPS Pro for planning our family vacations. My kids think geography is fun when we use topo maps to generate backpacking routes to load into our GPS. Now that we have started Geocaching, I am happy to see that MacGPS Pro provides everything we need for that too. What a versatile program! It's like the Swiss Army Knife of GPS software; it has a feature for everything I want to do" . . . Pchaulker
"I've been buying major upgrades to MacGPS Pro since v2.8.x.... and always glad to receive the minor upgrades by email too. I use MacGPS Pro with a GarminLegend for logging volunteer Search And Rescue (SAR) for land-search training and deployment. In combination with a PowerBook and Garmin Legend, MacGPS PRO is even great fun to take on road-trips just for vacation. Recently, I've been combining MacGPS Pro capability to calibrate images from Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) for great 3-D maps. MacGPS Pro is a great practical extension to any interest related to geographic information. One other thing... I've called L.James a few times, and he seems very interested in developing MacGPS Pro so it meets the expectations of those who purchase it". . . McRob
"I have been using this product since its inception. It has multiplied many times over the utility of my GPS unit. I have used most of the features of the program, they all work well and epitomize the friendliness of the Mac GUI. Dr. James should get an award for his efforts. The program is updated frequently and at no cost. It has maintained currency with the evolving GPS world and the OS too. The few times that I have had a question, an email always brings a quick response.
One of its best features is the ability to display a wide variety of maps on the screen and to then overlay in real time the track info from a GPS unit. I use this on airplane trips and it never fails to gather a crowd. I do a lot of outdoor activities and can archive my trips by downloading track logs afterward. Great for trip reports, future planning and for friends taking similar trips.
MacGPS Pro has captured the spirit of Mac". . . GPS Bob
