- Macintosh System Requirements: Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later, including Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.
Universal Binary provides native code for both Power PC and Intel processors.
For a Garmin USB connection, Mac OS X 10.3.8 or later is required.
- GPS Receivers:
Garmin: List of Supported Receivers. Supports most Garmin GPS Receivers, including the USB models, the Serial Port models, the hand-held models, the wrist models, the fixed-mount models, the aviation models, and the TracPak models. Does not support the Quest, and the iQue models. Some models that have both a USB and a serial interface are only supported over the Serial port.
Magellan: List of Supported Receivers. Supports Magellan GPS Receivers which have a serial interface, plus the Magellan eXplorist series with a USB Interface.
USGlobalSat: List of Supported Receivers. Supports the older (Rayming-branded) and the newer (USGlobalSat-branded) receivers.
Bluetooth: Supports most brands of Bluetooth wireless interface GPS Receivers, including Garmin, Socket, Fortuna, Rayming, and USGlobalSat.
Others: Supports most brands of NMEA serial-interface GPS Receivers in NMEA (real-time) mode. MacGPS Pro should work with any receiver which outputs NMEA 0183 Version 1.5 through Version 3.0.
Note: For many functions, MacGPS Pro works with no GPS receiver connected.
- Connecting Cables:
Most GPS receivers that have a USB cable: Use the USB cable that came with the receiver.
Any GPS receiver that has a PC serial cable with a Mac with a USB port: Use a Keyspan USB to Serial adapter. MacGPS Pro supports all Adapters made by Keyspan. Palm or Radio Shack USB to Serial Adapters are not recommended due to limitations in those products when used on a Mac.
Any Garmin serial-interface receiver that does not have a PC cable: Complete Macintosh-to-Garmin interface cables are readily available from James Associates.
Any serial-interface GPS receiver that does not have a PC cable: Use the appropriate PC serial cable from the receiver manufacturer with a Keyspan USB to Serial adapter for USB Macs.
Any Bluetooth-interface GPS receiver: No interface cable is needed. Use a D-Link Bluetooth USB adapter if your Macintosh does not have Bluetooth built in.
- GPS Data Files
Tab-Delimited Text Files allow data interchange with SpreadSheet, Database, and some GIS programs.
GPX files allow data interchange with Garmin's POI loader, other GPS programs, and Geocaching applications and web sites.
KML files allow data interchange with Google Earth.
- Maps and Charts:
Most maps in the following raster formats will work with MacGPS Pro: TIFF (TIF), JPEG (JPG), GIF, PNG, PICT, BMP, Photoshop (PSD), SGI, TGA, PDF in OS X, and for Nautical Charts - Maptech BSB versions 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5, and Softchart NOS/GEO. These maps may be obtained by downloading them from the Internet, purchasing them on CDROM or DVD, or scanning them yourself. Our Digital Maps and Charts Library lists many possible free and for-sale sources that are compatible with MacGPS Pro. In addition, we sell MacTopos USA by state on DVD and MacTopos National Parks on CDROM. MacGPS Pro does not upload maps to any GPS receiver. The maps are used on the Macintosh screen.
Any image that can be imported into MacGPS Pro can be manually calibrated to make places on the map correspond with their geographic coordinates. Many maps come with calibration files which make the georeferencing process automatic. MacGPS Pro understands the following calibration file formats: world files (TFW, JGW, GFW, PGW), JPR, MAP, GeoTIFF, BSB, and GEO.
The following are some of the organizations that produce maps, charts, or GPS data which are compatible with automatic georeferencing in MacGPS Pro:
